The department of medicine, the largest department of Gandhi Medical College, was established in the year 1956. Since its inception, the department has played a crucial role in management of emergencies including Bhopal Gas Tragedy and COVID – 19 pandemic. The department provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services with the expert faculty having diverse experience in various medical fields and strives to provide quality care to the patients.
The department is actively involved in teaching and training to students, providing clinical services to patients and in carrying out research activities in the field of Medicine. The department boasts of expert faculty in the field of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology/Hepatology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Hematology, Geriatrics and Medical Oncology. With a yearly intake of 18 Post graduate residents, department is running a Tertiary care center with 30 Bedded ICU and 240 bedded general wards and serves as referral center for district Hospitals, Medical colleges of the state and nearby other state.
The department also houses a 13 bedded dialysis unit which has carried out dialysis of over 7000 patients till date. The department also runs a Dialysis Technician course. The department provides specialized diagnostic facilities for EEG, NCV and EMG. With the inauguration of Renal Transplant unit in year 2021, the hospital became the first government medical college & hospital in Madhya Pradesh to perform renal transplants and does so at regular intervals.
The Department is committed to teaching both Undergraduates and Postgraduates with case based learning, Simulation classes/ workshops & Seminars. The department also has dedicated mentors/supervisor for Undergraduates and Postgraduates for research studies/ICMR-STS Projects.
Most of the Alumni of the department are well placed in academic/non-academic specialized institution not only in the country but globally.
