INTRODUCTION :
Department of Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery has very deep foundation, as necessity is the mother of invention so close heart surgical procedures like pericardiectomy pericardiostomy and thoracic procedures e.g. decortication, open window thoracostomy, intercostal drainage etc were done in 1970s because of high prevalence of infective diseases and scarcity of antibiotics.
Then higher prevalence of Rheumatic Heart Disease with most common presentation with severe Mitral Stenosis cure by close Mitral Valvotomy by General surgery department in 1980s and 1990s. The state of art “ Cardiac Science Centre “ was established in late 2000s which includes Cardiology, Cardiovascular-Thoracic surgery and Cardiac Anaesthesia, to care and cure highly prevalent cardiac, vascular and thoracic diseases.
Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery Department established and started serving the diseased population of central India independently in the year 2002. Presently Cardiovascular and thoracic surgery Department is working with capacity of 40 Beds including , ICU beds-09, HDU Beds-03, In Patient Department ward beds-28, and 2 Modular Operation theatres.

Teaching by the department-
Our department also involved in teaching activities of under graduate and post graduate of general surgery. Department is running post graduate diploma in perfusion technology course of 2 years since 2002. Department has also in the process of starting Mch in CTVS.
